The origin of the aforementioned trenching machines can be traced back to several decades ago. An inclusive overview of jet trenching technology and modeling is urgently needed to emphasize current research gaps and set the strategy for future development. These aspects have remained unclear to some extent.

This leads to the demand for construction optimization (efficiency of jetting devices) and robust soil-waterjet interaction analysis methods. Nozzle distribution and water-jet properties have a direct influence on the construction performance, particularly, the trench geometry and excavation speed. Understanding the complex interaction between soft sediments and jet trenchers is vital for trenching operations.
